Introduction An important feature of the current stage of functioning of domestic agrarian production is the role of family-type farms, which are not formally subjects of entrepreneurial activity. Uncertainty of legal status, numerous facts of restraint of economic activity on the part of state institutes in the conditions of actual absence of a system of measures to stimulate their transition to entrepreneurial bases, respectively, affected the total production volumes of agricultural products, incl. in the field of milk production. At the same time, it should be noted that the specific organization of the activity of the raw material segment of the dairy subcomplex, in particular the need for land as a forage base, leaves the peasant farms the main supplier of dairy raw materials. The influence of this segment of agrarian production on the general state of the industry made the relevance of the chosen research topic. The purpose of this article is to study the practical and methodological aspects of the economic activity of peasant farms in the field of milk production, taking into account the specific organizational and motivational relationships and general principles of functioning.
Results In the course of the research, the necessity of applying a comprehensive systematic approach to assessing the performance of the representatives of the small commodity sector in this sectoral direction was proved. The comparative analysis of the level of milk production efficiency in peasant farms and agricultural enterprises at the regional and national levels is carried out. The negative influence of low level of mechanization of production processes on the degree of competitiveness of functioning of representatives of small commodity sector is substantiated.
Conclusions The article explores the practical and methodological aspects of the development of milk production based on farms. The fact of the lack of a single methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of economic activity in the field of agricultural production in small agrarian units is noted. The directions of increase of efficiency of activity of peasant farms in the field of dairy production are formulated.
